This mandate is part of an overall package of requirements in the Cameron Gulbransen Kids Transportation Safety Act, signed in 2008, requiring automakers to improve rearview visibility in vehicles. The act was named after a two-year-old boy who died after his father accidentally backed over him in the family’s SUV. Consumers should know not everyone is for the regulation such as the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, an association of 12 major automakers and advocacy group for the auto industry that is opposing the rule. The association’s spokeswoman Gloria Bergquist says the automakers in her association believe you can’t force the consumer to pay for something they may not want in their vehicle. Bloomberg news reporter Angela Greiling Keane writes, “Bergquist says auto manufacturers aren’t opposed to regulations ensuring drivers have a clear line of sight behind them.
